The rapid growth of the Chinese PV Industry

by        Frits Verhoef, Vice President Solarplaza     Edwin Koot, President SolarPlaza

In April 2006 SolarPlaza organized a PV business tour to China. This article relates some of the experiences and findings of this international PV business tour. Thirty-one business executives from nine different countries participated in this tour.

Participants represented all segments of the industry: cell manufacturers, large multinationals potentially interested in solar energy, equipment manufacturers, system integrators, consultants etc.

The Chinese market
The domestic Chinese solar market is interesting because of its enormous growth-potential. If you look only at the numbers of installed solar power in China a trip seems not to be worthwhile at all: The total cumulative amount of installed solar power in 2005 was 70MW, of which only 5 MW was installed in 2005. The total electricity capacity in China is 6,000 times bigger.

More than half of the current PV installations are meant for the rural and remote areas, where almost 30 million people do not have access to a conventional electrical network. These areas are mainly located in the western part of China with a lot of solar resources. The applications used are for example small portable 10-20 Wp installations, PV-wind hybrid systems and solar pumps.

In the next decade this market will change from the smaller systems to larger grid-connected power generating systems, including the larger PV power plants of 10 MW in desert areas and rooftops systems like the 100.000 roofs programme in Shanghai. The short term market potential of these kind of applications is quite interesting, potentially 140 MWp by 2010.

The market of solar energy in China is likely to expand because of the Chinese government: In 2005 the Chinese renewable energy law was approved. According to the law, power grid operators should buy renewable-source-generated power at directed prices calculated by the government. The extra costs incurred by this will be shared throughout the overall power network. China's government imposed a national renewable energy requirement that is expected to boost the use of renewable energy capacity up to 10 percent by 2020.

The potential growth of the Chinese domestic market looks impressive, but is still an expected growth. The reality is the already rapidly growing Chinese solar industry.

The Chinese solar industry – some examples
The growth of the production capacity of solar wafers, solar cells and solar modules is astonishing. The expectations are that the Chinese production capacity is going to beat Japan and Germany within five years!

Yingli Solar Company
The second largest module manufacturer in China, Yingli Solar produced 16 MW of modules in 2003. Within 2-3 years they expect to produce 600 MW.

The SolarPlaza business tour visited Yingli Solar in Baoding. Yingli is a vertically integrated company, which is planning an IPO within the next 12 months. On April 29th, SolarPlaza was invited again for the opening ceremony of what they call their 'third phase project': the installation of a 500 MW production line.

The Yingli Solar Company origins from the Tianwei Yingli New Energy Resources Co., Ltd., founded in 1998. Ever since, Yingli Solar kept developing state-of-the art production lines for wafers, cells and modules. State support and western technology helped Yingli Solar to become one of the hottest PV companies in China at this moment.

From the first phase (May 2004), with 6MW wafers, 10MW cells, 50MW modules to respectively 95/60/100MW in the second phase, complying with IEC, UL, CE and TüV already are impressive figures and facts. Yingli Solar could well be China’s and the internationally fastest growing PV manufacturer.
During the SolarPlaza PV business tour the delegates got an impression of the production process, from ingot casting to module assembly.

The opening ceremony was impressive with over a 1.000 people being witness. Among many officials there were interesting speeches of the municipal secretary of Baoding, the general director of the Energy Department of the National Development and Reform Commission and various officials of the Hebei Province.

The third phase will be completed in 2008 and will require an investment of almost $300M. Over 330 thousand square meters of premises are reserved for a state-of-the-art PV production plant. Apart from that, the National New Energy Equipment Industrial Base, the Solar Grade Silicon Crystalline Wafer Research Centre and a Professional Training Centre will be founded.

The production plant will have a capacity of 500MW wafers/cells and modules. 70% of the facilities should be finished by the end of 2006, boosting 100MW production at that point. By the end of 2008, production should reach 600MW with a turnover of RMB 16 billion (EUR 1.58 billion) and 3,5 billion RMB (EUR 345 million) profit.

The Research Centre will keep Yingli Solar on top of the market, developing new technologies, materials and facilities. Yingli will keep on doing such in close cooperation with international manufactures and research laboratories.

The PV System research centre will be established to overcome the lack of experience with large (grid connected) systems, whereas the training centre will stand for long-term relationships with universities, research centers and will provide well-trained and high level PV technicians.

Suntech Power
At Suntech Power the SolarPlaza delegation was welcomed by Dr. Zhengrong Shi, the founder and CEO of the company. The history of Suntech power is a young man's dream, which resembles the Silicon Valley success stories in the late nineties of the last century.

Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd. specializes in the design, development, manufacturing and sale of photovoltaic (PV) cells, modules and systems. Founded in January of 2001 by Dr. Zhengrong Shi,

a distinguished PV technology scientist, Suntech has rapidly developed into a leading solar energy company. In less than three years since it started its business operations in May 2002, Suntech has increased its manufacturing capacity by 12 times, becoming one of the world's top 10 manufacturers of PV cells based on production output. Dr. Zhengrong Shi stated in his presentation given to the SolarPlaza delegation that Suntech is committed to become the lowest cost per watt provider of PV solutions. The Suntech goal is to achieve a cost level of 1US$ per Wp for a turnkey installation. On December 15th, 2005 Suntech Power went public. The stock price rose over 80% in 4 months. This five years old company is now worth over 5 billion US$...

Solar wafer and cell production
During the tour a symposium dedicated to solar silicon, wafer and cell production was organized. LDK Solar High Tech Co, a Xinyu, Jiangxi based wafer manufacturer, expects that as the industry scales up and becomes more mature, specialization and focus will be the keys to success rather than vertical integration. The focus of LDK is the production of multi crystalline solar wafers. Although LDK Solar just started with production of trials in February 2006, the company targets on a production capacity of 200 MW by early 2007. Eventually LDK Solar is aiming at achieving a 1000 MW silicon wafer production capacity by 2010. The strategy is to supply the most economic solar wafer to long-term strategic partners. The most economic wafer production will be achieved by focusing on technology and R&D combined with economy of scales. Bigger ingots, thinner wafers, thinner wires and bigger wafers will contribute to a more economic solar wafer production. In the long-term (2010), LDK Solar expects a serious drop (75%) of the wafer price compared to current prices.

Another high-flyer is Nanjing CEEG PV-Tech that focuses on solar cell manufacturing. Founder Dr Jianhua Zhoa informed the delegates of the business tour that his company started their first 32 MW per year production line in June 2005. By March of this year the company had already reached a capacity of 100 MW/year that will be further extended to 600 MW by 2008. Two thirds of the production is in mono-crystalline CZ cells and, due to their continuous research efforts, cell efficiency has already increased from 15% to 16.2%. CEEG is building its own research laboratory, which will be operational in June 2006. With the R&D effort, cell efficiencies of >20% will be feasible according to CEEG.

Unlike LDK or CEEG, Trina Solar is a typical and vertically integrated PV company, like Yingli Solar. The company produces ingots, wafers and modules, with a capacity of 50 MW per year. Cell production with the same capacity is planned for this year. Expanding the production capacity of all these products to 300 MW per year is being foreseen for 2008. With the participation of Trina Solar in several Chinese solar PV projects (for instance power station in western provinces like Tibet), Trina is present in the complete supply chain, except for the production of silicon. The forecast for the sales revenue in 2010 is no less than 2 billion USD!

During various sessions of the China tour several Chinese companies presented their plans to extend their production capacity to levels of several hundreds of MW in the coming years. In Beijing and Shanghai 40+ Chinese companies attended brokerage events, where the international delegates could meet their Chinese counterparts and discuss potential business opportunities.

Looking at the position and size of the Chinese companies that took part in the PV tour, now is an ideal time to forge your contacts with these industrial players. Delegates benefited from this event by establishing the first fruitful contacts for further collaboration.

The delegates and the tour's organizer, SolarPlaza, have expressed their satisfaction with the results of the Chinese PV tour. Therefore a repeat event is very likely to take place either this year or in 2007. On the shorter term the SolarPlaza team is organizing a PV business tour to Spain September 17-22 2006. Further tours being planned for this year will include Germany and Italy.

Oslo, Norway: REC to Double its Production of Polysilicon

Renewable Energy Corporation (REC) has decided to more than double its production of polysilicon as it commences construction of a third polysilicon plant. The new plant is based on the proprietary technology that REC has developed for production of granular polysilicon. The plant will add approximately 6,500 MT to REC's polysilicon production capacity. Annualized revenues from this expansion will represent NOK 1.8 to 2.0 billion based on current silicon pricing.

REC Silicon carried out front-end engineering and design work since the summer of 2005, and has tested its new technology in a single half-scale pilot reactor, which has generated output that satisfies all of the Company's quality and production criteria. Based on the test results REC will immediately commence on more detailed engineering and construction work for the plant that will be located in Moses Lake, Washington, USA. Mechanical completion of the plant is expected by the end of the first quarter 2008, with final completion and ramp-up of production in the third quarter of 2008.

The total capital requirement for the engineering and construction of the plant is estimated at USD 600 million, which is already fully funded under existing loan facilities and equity. The investment further strengthens REC Silicon's cost-leadership position, and enables REC Wafer, REC Solar and the joint venture EverQ to pursue high-growth business plans.

The new proprietary reactor technology is based on proprietary Intellectual Property Rights originally developed at REC Advanced Silicon Material LLC and further developed and commercialized at REC Solar Grade Silicon LLC, both of which REC Silicon currently controls 100%. The production technology is based on silane gas and significantly reduces the capital and operating costs from the current levels.

"We have run FBR pilot production over the past year and have seen very encouraging results. REC is currently cost competitive in the industry and this investment will further strengthen our position. The feedback we have received from solar cell pilot customers is that the outcome is identical to cells made with regular polysilicon", says CEO Erik Thorsen in REC ASA.

REC Silicon has put together an experienced project team for the construction of the plant, some of which were part of the project team that built the REC Advanced Silicon Materials polysilicon plant at Butte, Montana in 1996-98. REC's primary contractor in the expansion project is Fluor Corporation Inc, which is one of the world's largest engineering firms with extensive competencies in refinery and chemical plant design and construction.

REC Silicon produced 5,300 MT of polysilicon in 2005 and plans to increase its production of approximately ten percent this year. REC Silicon will continue to further de-bottleneck existing manufacturing plants in 2007.

要点:REC决定建造第三座多晶硅厂,预计2008年达产,增加产能6500吨。REC2005年多晶硅产量为5300吨,计划06年增产10%。

Solar Integrated Technologies Signs Roofing Systems MOU with Master Renovables

May 24, 2006

Solar Integrated Technologies, a provider of non-residential building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) roofing systems, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Master Renovables, an engineering company specializing in the solar energy sector, for sales of Solar Integrated's BIPV roofing systems in Spain.

In the MOU, Master Renovables commits to purchase a minimum of up to 1.6 MW and a maximum of up to 2.5 MW of BIPV roofing systems from Solar Integrated through 2008, with minimum annual purchase amounts for 2006, 2007 and 2008.

As part of the MOU, Solar Integrated has received an order from Master Renovables for a 109 kW BIPV roofing system to be installed on the roof of a consumer goods production facility in Spain. This represents the second order received by Solar Integrated from Master Renovables. The first order, completed in 2005, was for a supermarket warehouse in Barcelona, Spain.

"We are pleased to partner with Master Renovables for sales of our BIPV roofing systems in the exciting Spanish market. This repeat order from Master Renovables puts our partnership on a strong footing from the very beginning," commented Jon W. Slangerup, Chief Executive Officer of Solar Integrated. "Customers are increasingly seeking to secure access to our products over multi-year arrangements, which provides further validation of our business expansion strategy."

"Bringing innovative renewable solutions has been one of Master Renovables' priorities. With Solar Integrated's BIPV technology being compatible with lightweight roof systems, we are able to bring double value added to our costumers - photovoltaic production and roofing impermeabilization guarantees," stated Jordi Giró, Managing Director of Master Renovables. "Our initial experience with Solar Integrated was very positive. Their BIPV roofing system fits very well with the requirements of our customers. With this arrangement, we have secured a supply of BIPV roofing systems to support our expected demand for the Spanish market."

Dovetail Solar Completes Two PV Systems in Cincinnati

Cincinnati, OH, USA:

Dovetail Solar & Wind, one of Ohio’s providers of renewable energy systems, has completed two of the largest solar electric installations in the Cincinnati area as prominent elements of new green buildings.

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden engaged Dovetail to install a 19.3 kilowatt solar photovoltaic array on the Zoo’s new Harold C. Schott Educational Center building. The Education Center, which is currently under construction, will be a dynamic facility that integrates the excitement and wonder of exploring a rain forest habitat with the creative approach to educating children and adults for which the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is nationally renowned.

The 31,000-square-foot Education Center, designed by CLR design inc. and Glaserworks, and being built by Turner Construction, will be home to the Zoo’s expanded educational programs as well as a 250-seat general-purpose auditorium. Ten new classrooms will encircle a “Discovery Forest,” a large round greenhouse containing both plants and animals that will greatly enrich the overall learning experience. The Center will accommodate overnight student groups and clubs that participate in the ever-popular Nocturnal Adventures program.

The solar system was installed by Dovetail working as a subcontractor to B&J Electric. It is one of several “green” building features incorporated into the Center. It uses 168 units of Evergreen Solar, Inc. 115 watt photovoltaic modules installed on the South facing roof. The DC power produced by this large array is converted into 208 volt AC power by five PV POWERED 4600 grid-tie inverters, and feeds into the building’s standard electrical system. It will significantly reduce the external electrical power that will be required to operate the building. Any excess power that is generated by the solar system will automatically route to the utility power grid. This non-polluting, renewable energy system will avoid approximately 68,000 pounds of global warming CO2 from being produced annually by a traditional fossil fuel electric power plant.

In April, Dovetail also added an 11 kilowatt solar array to the new Melink Corporation headquarters in Milford, Ohio. Melink is one of the leading providers of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) products and services for restaurant, supermarket, and retail chains. Melink Corporation’s new 30,000 square-foot headquarters is located just east of Cincinnati, Ohio. Initial review indicates the building will earn a LEED ‘gold’ certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. A gold ranking would make Melink’s building the only one in Ohio, and among a select group in the world achieving this level.

The solar photovoltaic system installed by Dovetail on the roof of the building is one of numerous green building features incorporated into this state of the art facility. The building features a geothermal variable-speed pump; a high-performance envelope including the roof, walls, and windows; natural lighting and passive ventilation strategies; indoor air quality controls; dual flush toilets and waterless urinals; recycling systems; and many other green elements. Preliminary analyses of utility bills confirm the building’s energy and water efficiency.

The Melink solar system installed by Dovetail is comprised of 64 Sharp Electronics Corp. 170 watt photovoltaic modules installed on ballasted racks on the building’s roof. The DC power produced by this 10.9 KW array is converted into 208 volt AC power by two PV POWERED 4600 inverters and feeds into the building’s standard electrical system. Net Metering will ensure that any excess power that is generated by the solar system on weekends will automatically route to the electric utility power grid. This non-polluting, renewable energy system will keep approximately 40,000 pounds of global warming CO2 from being produced annually by a traditional fossil fuel electric power plant.

“We are delighted to have been selected by both these industry leaders to be their renewable energy partner as they built their advanced, environment friendly facilities”, stated Mr. Matthew Bennett, President of Dovetail Solar & Wind. “It is exciting to see solar energy gaining momentum in the Cincinnati area. This echoes the strong demand Dovetail is experiencing across Ohio for solar and wind power generation from residents, and commercial and non-profit organizations as they move to clean, renewable, cost-effective energy.”

Solar Integrated Technologies, a provider of non-residential Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) roofing systems, announced today that it has entered into an agency agreement with Sarnafil Inc., an international manufacturer of high-tech polymer roofing membranes.

Under the agreement, Sarnafil has agreed to market Solar Integrated's BIPV roofing systems through Sarnafil's extensive sales network in North America. Solar Integrated also announced today that it has extended its European agency agreement with Sarnafil. Currently, Sarnafil exclusively markets Solar Integrated's BIPV roofing systems through its sales channel in Germany. The new arrangement will also cover Sarnafil's sales channel in Spain. The Spanish Government is committed to the adoption of renewable energy and has implemented a photovoltaic electricity feed-in tariff system similar to that of Germany.

"This agreement strengthens the important relationship between our two companies and builds on the early sales success we have jointly achieved in Germany. Sarnafil has been our channel to market for more than 50% of our projects to date in Germany," commented Jon W. Slangerup, Chief Executive Officer of Solar Integrated. "Accessing Sarnafil's extensive and experienced sales and installation channels in these large potential solar markets, particularly in the United States and Spain, positions us very well for additional near-term sales opportunities for prospective customers that fit our target profile."

"There is a complementary fit between Solar Integrated's BIPV roofing system and the emerging needs of our end-users - owners of non-residential buildings with large low-slope roofs," said Brian Whelan, President of Sarnafil Inc. "Our customers already look to Sarnafil for the best in energy-efficient roofing products. Adding Solar Integrated's innovative BIPV roofing systems to our product mix is a logical step. Building owners are increasingly interested in ways to reduce their peak energy costs and hedge their long-term exposure to increases in electricity costs. Solar Integrated's BIPV roofing system provides our sales channel with a solution that meets the end user's roofing and onsite solar power requirements. As both a supplier of single-ply roofing membranes and a sales agent to Solar Integrated, we are highly motivated to see their BIPV roofing systems successfully sell into our channels."

These sales channel arrangements are in addition to the existing supply agreement between the companies. In April 2004, Solar Integrated entered into a supply agreement with Sarnafil pursuant to which Sarnafil supplies Solar Integrated with high quality polymer single-ply roofing membranes on an exclusive basis for the North American market. The initial term of the supply agreement with Sarnafil expires on December 31, 2009.

UPDATE 2-Renewable Energy core earnings jump, shares drop

UPDATE 2-Renewable Energy core earnings jump, shares drop
Wed May 24, 2006 5:31 AM ET
(Recasts, adds analysts' reactions, shares)

By Alister Doyle and Richard Solem OSLO, May 24 (Reuters) - Shares in Norway's Renewable Energy Corp. (REC.OL: Quote, Profile, Research), one of the world's biggest solar power equipment makers, tumbled 10.1 percent on Wednesday even though it reported a surge in core earnings and predicted strong growth.

Its shares, which have fallen from a May 10 peak of 120 crowns just after their debut on the Oslo bourse, were at 80 crowns by 0855 GMT as analysts said investors appeared to be concerned about a non-cash revaluation of convertible loans, which pushed the company to a net loss.

Underlying the slide, many investors are baffled about how to value a company whose growth is
based on a shift to non-polluting energies from high-priced oil.
Renewable Energy now has a market value of about $6.7 billion.

Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) jumped to 380 million crowns ($62.4 million) in January-March from 85 million in the same 2005 quarter.

"The numbers were very good," said Tore Oestby, an analyst at Handelsbanken Markets in Oslo. "I find the reaction from the market a bit strange given the strong numbers. He said the share fall might be linked to the one-off loan reassessment.
"But it is irrelevant for the company because it reflects that the market value of the shares which could be converted went up," he said. "They are fully converted now." Oestby said he did not yet have a price recommendation on the stock.

The company said the reassessment of the dollar and euro convertible loans amounted to a non-cash effect of 791 million crowns and pushed the group to a net loss of 406 million crowns in the first quarter from a profit of 38 million a year earlier.

OVERVALUED

"The numbers were quite good," echoed Marianne Blaauw at Pareto Securities. "They had the accounting effect, but that shouldn't really affect the shares."

In one of the few analyses of Renewable Energy -- when the shares were at 93 crowns -- SEB Enskilda said they were worth no more than 80 crowns. It said the company had a premium position in an attractive industry but that the shares had simply been overvalued.

The company makes solar power system components from silicon to solar panels. First-quarter revenues leapt to 872 million crowns from 367 million.

"All in all, a strong growth from the first quarter," Chief Executive Erik Thorsen told a presentation.

"REC (Renewable Energy) has an ambition to grow at least in line with the photovoltaic solar market," the company said, adding that it shared analysts' forecasts for strong growth in the industry.

Its rivals include SolarWorld (SWVG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research), Q-Cells (QCEG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research), Suntech (STP.N: Quote, Profile, Research), Sunpower (SPWR.O: Quote, Profile, Research) and ErSol (ES6G.DE: Quote, Profile, Research). Among rival specialist silicon producers are Hemlock, Wacker Chemie (WCHG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) and MEMC Electronic Materials (WFR.N: Quote, Profile, Research).

Many nations say they are promoting renewable energies such as solar, hydro or wind power. The U.N.'s Kyoto Protocol obliges most industrial nations to cut emissions of heat-trapping gases, emitted largely by burning fossil fuels.

Renewable Energy said on Tuesday it planned to build a $600 million polysilicon plant in the United States, more than doubling its production of a material used in producing solar panels.

Thorsen said expansion would continue if needed. "We do not intend to stop with one polysilicon plant. If this industry continues to grow, there is a need for additional capacity."

Renewable Energy shares were listed on the Oslo bourse on May 9 after an initial public offering at 95 crowns per share. They hit a low of 74.5 on May 19 -- far outpacing a wider decline by the energy-intensive Oslo market amid a global stocks downturn.

靠!哪里来的马甲!

劳资最见不得的人有三种:
一、藏头漏尾、见不得人的假冒伪劣产品;
