SAN JOSE, Calif. — The United States could soon overtake Germany as the world's top solar power generator, according to Sharp Corp. in a report from Reuters.
"I think everybody in the know in the industry knows that the United States is going to be the biggest market in solar,” said Ron Kenedi, vice president for Sharp's Solar Energy Solutions Group, in the report. Japan’s Sharp is the world's largest maker of solar panels.
More than 20 states in the U.S. have adopted renewable energy standards, or targets to get a percentage of their power from renewable sources, according to the report
The United States is still playing catch-up in solar. In 2005, Germany had nearly four times the solar power generation, as compared to the United States, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association. And Japan has about three times as much installed solar power as the U.S., according to the organization.
In total, solar panel makers sold some $11 billion worth of equipment last year. Still, solar energy is expensive. Solar costs about $0.35 a kilowatt hour, before subsidies, compared with electricity rates of $0.23 cents a kilowatt hour in parts of California, according to the report.
