路透报道弗雷堡PV会议--多晶硅短缺在2008年中止
Solar silicon shortage to end in 2008 - executives
Mon Jun 26, 2006 6:13am ET
By Georgina Prodhan
FREIBURG IM BREISGAU, Germany, June 26 (Reuters) - A shortage of silicon,
a key material in making solar panels, is slowing the growth of the solar
energy sector but the problem is set to ease by 2008, executives told a
conference.
Sales of photovoltaic solar panels are growing by around 35 percent every
year as more countries implement incentives for this source of renewable
energy, and solar panel producers are struggling to keep up with demand.
But volumes of silicon produced for the $15 billion a year solar sector
are rising and solar cell makers say they will be able to go a lot further
towards meeting soaring demand caused by a need for cleaner energy, record
oil prices and government subsidies.
The chief executive of Deutsche Solar, the silicon wafer arm of Germany's
SolarWorld (SWVG.DE: Quote, Profile, Research), told an industry
conference in this southern German town that temporary materials shortages
were normal for such a fast-growing industry.
"The silicon shortage is not new. If you have growth of 35 percent, as we
have had and as we expect for the next 5 years, you will have
bottlenecks," Peter Woditsch said.
He said he expected silicon production to more than double in the next two
years as companies such as Hemlock and MEMC (WFR.N: Quote, Profile,
Research) of the United States and Germany's Wacker Chemie (WCHG.DE:
Quote, Profile, Research) expand their production capacity.
His comments may help ease concerns among investors in the solar sector.
Solar wafers, cells and panels maker SolarWorld (SWVG.DE: Quote, Profile,
Research) from Germany said in May it was sold out for 2006 and 2007. Its
shares, even though they are up 160 percent in the last 12 months, are
down 38 percent since the May warning.
KEY INGREDIENT
Silicon is the key ingredient in a photovoltaic cell that transforms
energy from the sun into electricity.
Solar cell makers currently compete with the electronics sector for
silicon supplies, with about half of the 40,000 tonnes expected this year
to go the solar industry.
Makers of microchips need smaller amounts and greater purity of silicon,
and are prepared to pay more for it than solar companies are.
Solar companies have responded by cutting the amount of silicon they use
by slicing silicon wafers more thinly, slicing silicon ingots more
efficiently with less wastage, or developing new technologies that require
less silicon or none at all.
One of the companies aiming to avoid silicon is Shell Solar (RDSa.L:
Quote, Profile, Research), which pioneered so-called thin-film technology
and is betting on a variant based on copper indium di-selinide (CIS).
"CIS is at least as good as polycrystalline silicon," Franz Karg, the
company's head of photovoltaic development, told the conference. But he
admitted CIS was not yet commercial.
Germany's Wuerth Solar started mass production of CIS thin film a year ago
and says it will be producing at full capacity, churning out 200,000
modules annually, by the end of the year.
Bernhard Dimmler, the company's head of technical development, predicted
the technology could be producing solar power as cheaply as 0.5 euros
($0.6) per watt by 2015. This compares with around $2.30/watt for solar
cells now.
The traditionalists like Deutsche Solar, however, say they are not wasting
time and money on reduced silicon technologies when traditional silicon
solar panels continue to fall in price by between 5 and 10 percent every
year.
"Silicon is available in 25 percent of the earth's crust, so there is no
need for a silicon shortage," Woditsch said. (Additional reporting by

Peter Woditsch称多晶硅短缺并不新鲜,如果你每年增长35%,就象他们已经经历的
和预测今后5年会发生的,你肯定会遇到瓶颈;
他认为由于Hemlock、MEMC、Wacker扩张产能,2年内多晶硅产量将翻倍;
Solarworld称已经销售完他们06年和07年的产能。他们的股价在过去12个月上涨160
%,在5月后下跌38%;
太阳能电池厂商在和电子厂商竞争多晶硅原料,预计今年40000吨的产量的一半将流
向太阳能行业;
电子厂商需要较少的数量和更高的纯度,并准备付更多的钱;
太阳能厂商回应以通过切割硅片更薄、切割硅锭更有效率降低浪费、或发展其他少用

德国的Wuerth Solar 一年前开始CIS生产,今年将满产,每年生产20万张面板;
Wuerth Solar技术部首脑Bernhard Dimmler认为CIS将在2015年将费用减低到0.5欧元
/瓦(0.6美元/瓦),而目前该电池片价格为约2.3美元/瓦;
然而,传统电池制造商如Deutsche Solar则称并不准备浪费时间在其他减用硅的技术
上,既然传统晶体硅电池面板平均每年将价格下降5-10%;
Woditsch称:硅在地壳中含量占25%,因此并没有真正意义上的硅短缺。

Bonn, Germany: Degussa AG and SolarWorld AG Partner on Solar Grade Silicon
Production
Degussa AG and SolarWorld AG are entering the industrial-scale production
of solar grade silicon. To this end both companies have decided to expand
their current cooperation for the production of this solar raw material.
The joint venture Joint Solar Silicon GmbH & Co KG (JSSI), Freiberg, will
start producing solar grade silicon according to a self-developed
innovative and cost-effective process at the Degussa location in
Rheinfelden in 2008. The investment cost will reach a double digit million
EUR amount.
The two companies are planning the production of initially 850 tonnes of
solar grade silicon per annum for the next ten years. From 2009 onwards,
the SolarWorld Group will be able to cover up to 20% of its own raw
materials requirements cost-effectively from this source.
“By entering into solar silicon production we are putting our raw
material supply on a basis of its own. The fact that we are substantially
enhancing our activities in this central area of the solar industry means
that we are at the same time strengthening the value chain in our
integrated technology group", says Dipl.-Ing. Frank H. Asbeck, Chairman
and Chief Executive Officer of SolarWorld AG.
Degussa AG will supply the silan gas that is required for the production
of the solar grade silicon. To secure long-term supplies SolarWorld AG has
concluded a 10-year supply agreement with Degussa for the supply of this
silicon-containing gas.
"We are happy that our joint, intensive research and development work on
one of the most important questions of the solar industry is now beginning
to bear fruit", says Dipl.-Ing. Boris Klebensberger, Chief Operations
Officer of SolarWorld AG. "With this innovative process Joint Solar
Silicon is holding the central key to the safe and cost-effective supply
of solar grade silicon in its hands."
The reliable supply of raw materials is among the most important tasks of
the solar industry in the years to come. Against this background both
partners had created the joint venture for the development of silicon from
silane gas in the year 2002.
After intensive development efforts, the company commissioned a pilot
reactor in 2005 whose results turned out to be very positive. First
quantities are already being processed into solar silicon wafers within
the SolarWorld Group.

The founders of Google send a factory of cells that will produce 430
annual megawatts
Writing by: Writing the 21 Jun, 2006 - 05:39 TRAINS
The American company/signature Nanosolar will manufacture about 200
million capsules to the year with technology of thin film.
The photovoltaic one is fashionable in the planet. Almost every day, the
holders of mediates them announce a new record associated to the solar
industry. Today it touched the turn to him to the production of capsules.
Nanosolar, a American High Wood company (Californian), founded with
capital of the creators of Google, advanced that it will construct the
greater factory of cells solar of the world. It will produce 200 annual
million, about 450 megawatts.
The solar energy is shocking Valley Silicone, since decades ago the
industry made computer science. The factory of Nanosolar will rise in some
point still to decide of the bay of San Francisco. Its production almost
will triple the present capacity of the American industry. She will be
operative in 2007.
The capsules that Nanosolar will make are of thin film and they do not
contain silicon, the main semiconductor used in the manufacture of cells
and whose scarcity in solar degree has been clipping for a pair of years
the potential growth of the photovoltaic industry.
The American company/signature assures that their cells, developed in the
last four years in laboratory, are as efficient as those of silicon but
with a price of production the fifth lowest one. This type of cells is
printed on flexible plastic with a copper alloy. In this sense, the
American already speak of a movement of the photovoltaic industry from the
business of the semiconductor to the one of impression.
The cells produced in High Wood will be transported to Berlin, in Germany,
where they will be assembled in panels and buildings and independent
photovoltaic power stations will be commercialized for their integration
in.
100 million dollars in bottoms
Between the investing presents in the capital of Nanosolar they are, in
addition to the founders of Google, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, Capital
SAC and GLG Partners, Swiss Re, Grazia Equity, Christian Reitberger and
Capricorn Management, among others.
The company/signature communicated today, agreeing with the announcement
of the construction of its plant of production, that counts on bottoms of
100 million dollars.
The American photovoltaic industry invoiced 11,200 million dollars in
2005, a 55% more than in the previous year. In 2015, according to the
accounts of the analyst of market Clean Energy, it could reach the 51,000
million dollars. |
