Taiwan solar cell maker E-Ton secures 10-year supply of solar wafers from M.Setek

E-Ton Solar Tech, a maker of monocrystalline solar cells in Taiwan, announced on April 21 that it has
contracted Japan-based M.Setek to supply 164 million silicon wafers from April 2006 to December
2015, a total equivalent to a capacity of 400MWp (megawatt peak).
According to the M.Setek's website, the company is the largest supplier of monocrystalline silicon
wafers in Japan. The company already has two plants in Japan and two in China. It plans to expand
its capacity to six plants in the future. Because the cost of silicon is likely to slip after global supply and
demand reaches equilibrium in a few years, M.Setek has agreed to base its supply price on current
market conditions in the contract, according to local industry sources. In addition, E-Ton may invest
in M.Setek’s expansion of silicon wafer production capacity, the sources indicated. E-Ton declined to
comment on this speculation.
With a long-term supply of solar wafers secured, E-Ton aims to become one of the world’s top three
producers of monocrystalline solar cells, according to the company. E-Ton will expand its annual
production capacity from 28MWp at present to 53MWp in June this year and further to 78MWp in
January 2007, the company pointed out. Earlier this year, the Chinese-language Economic Daily News
(EDN) reported that the company would expand capacity to 100MWp by the end of this year.
