SunPower (Sunnyvale, Calif.), a subsidiary of Cypress Semiconductor Inc., said revenue for the first quarter was $42.0 million, up 43 percent from the prior quarter's revenue of $29.3 million and up 278 percent from the year-ago first quarter revenue of $11.1 million.
GAAP net income for the quarter was $300,000, or breakeven net income per share, compared to last quarter's net loss of $600,000, or minus $0.01 loss per share, and the year-ago first quarter net loss of $7.2 million.
SunPower beat Wall Street’s estimates, which called for sales of $39.5 million in the period. Non-GAAP EPS of $0.04 was at the top end of guidance of $0.02 to $0.04, and above street consensus of $0.03.
“However, gross margin was somewhat less than anticipated at 17 percent,” said Piper Jaffray analyst Jesse Pichel. SunPower was projected to see 18-to-19 percent in gross margins, Pichel said in a report.
“We believe this is mostly due to Line 3 start-up costs, but higher spot polysilicon prices are likely,” he said in a report. “Based on guidance for Q2, SunPower is guiding gross margins up modestly.”

Mountain View, CA, USA: Microsoft's Mountain View Campus Goes Solar
Microsoft Corp. has installed a new solar electric system at the company's Silicon Valley Campus (SVC). It is the largest of its kind in Silicon Valley. Generating 480kW at peak capacity, this system is composed of 2,288 tiles that will supply enough energy to power nearly 500 homes.
SunPower Corporation's high-efficiency solar panels were integrated into the rooftop solar system designed and supplied by PowerLight, Corp. of Berkeley, Calif. SunPower says that their solar panels offer up to 50 percent more power per square foot than conventional solar technology, guaranteeing Microsoft the maximum power from their rooftop solar system.
