In 1951 a Princeton University senior named John Bogle (remember
that name) wrote a thesis paper titled “Mutual Funds Can Make No
Claims of Superiority over the Market Averages.” His research was
backed up by numerous studies over the next two decades. A 1966
study in Harvard Business Review titled “Can Mutual Funds Outguess the
Market,” concluded that no, they can’t.
