While I wait for new books to arrive it’s often worthwhile to go back to some old ones. John Sweeney’s Campaign Trading: Tactics and Strategies to Exploit the Markets (Wiley, 1996) is a book I return to more frequently than most, even though it’s no page turner. Sweeney is best known for his development and analysis of the notion of maximum adverse excursion (MAE), both in this book and in another one (Maximum Adverse Excursion: Analyzing Price Fluctuations for Trading Management) published a year later. He also introduced, although he didn’t study it as rigorously, the idea of favorable excursions (MaxFE and MinFE). Since I personally keep some rough statistics on a less clearly measurable variation of these ideas, I like to touch base now and again with the real McCoy.

The book’s title promises far more than it delivers, but even the promise and the few words about it are enticing. Campaign trading means trading continuously across different markets, using a set of rules tailored to each market that can both identify the mode the market is in and allow traders to be active in all market phases—basing, breakout, trending, topping, and retreat. (A sidenote here: Although Sweeney glosses over the distinction, I don’t believe that the set of meta-rules that identify market regimes can be the same as the set of entry and exit rules. Can’t we ever get past using moving average crossovers as the default setting for every occasion?) Campaign trading also means using “loss-control techniques to generate profitability even when our trading signals aren’t God-given, and varying tactics to compound our position.” (pp. 23-24)
Sweeney is now on stride. MAE, the maximum intraday adverse price movement from the point of entry for a trading system, gives us an idea of whether the system is even tradable given our account size. If it is tradable, backtested trades should be divided into winners and losers, with the MAE tabulated for each. A decent set of trading rules should generate distinctly different distributions for good trades (that is, trades with a smaller MAE) and bad trades. Finally, traders should adjust their stops “to the combination of loss and profit level [they think] is appropriate.” (p. 56) (I should note in passing that Sweeney invokes the notion of stops in this book to keep things simple, though he suggests that in practice traders should consider using options rather than stops to minimize loss. His discussion of options toward the end of the book, however, is itself simplistic. Anyone contemplating replacing stops with options should do a lot more homework.)
What are the benefits of using this experientially-based system of setting stops? Sweeney answers: “What I really like about this sort of analysis . . . is that it’s imperceptible to competitive traders and analysts bound up in parametric statistics and charts. Moreover, because it’s applicable to any set of trading rules, its results are unique and my stops are less likely to rest around the levels where everyone else normally clusters.” (p. 61)

Sweeney is a frustrating writer because he throws out a lot of ideas that he doesn’t follow through on and belabors some obvious points. But every time I go back to this book I catch the glimmer of another bright idea. It’s seductive.

About the Author
John Wang, PhD, is cofounder, Chairman, and CEO of AbleSys Corporation. He cofounded AbleSys in 1994, and developed the Spyglass trading system in 1992, ASCTrend indicators in 1995, and the eASCTrend trading system in 2000. Customer ReviewsExcellent book about trading techniques and theory
This book is useful to traders of all backgrounds. I know that it will help me in my own trading. Most of the concepts in the book apply to trading in multiple markets and on multiple time frames. This book has a lot of information about both entry and exit strategies. There is not a lot of complicated math. It is easier to read and understand than many books about technical analysis and trading. It not necessary to know anything about charting before reading the book. In fact, if you read this book you will probably conclude that most books about technicial analysis are worthless. It is true that some parts of the book apply to functions of the AbleTrend 7.0 program, but most of the concepts are universal. The book is valuable whether you have used AbleTrend 7.0 or not. Besides trading techniques, the book has some interesting information on how Chinese philosophy applies to trading. The book presents some some compelling theories on why some trading techniques make sense while others will never work.

It is true that some of the indicators discussed in the book are proprietary. I don't think that this takes away from the usefulness of the book. It is not really necessary to know all of the mathematical algorithms. The most unfortunate aspect of the book is that it is printed in black & white. There are many trading examples, but they are difficult to follow because you cannot see the colors on the charts. You will probably want to get the book's charts in color by contacting AbleSys.


In Depth and Practical
This book offers an unusually in depth and fascinating view of the natural law that underlies trend-following trading techniques. It then shows practical applications of the theory, putting traders in a better position to profit from the markets. It is the authors' philosophical approach to practical issues that makes this book such a standout. And they do make it clear how to apply their approach to trading, even without the software. This is a wonderful, insider view for traders who want a deeper understanding of market action so they can better make trading decisions.
Excellent Guide to Successful Trading
This book attempts to transfer the knowledge that Dr Wang has accumulated over many years of research and development. I personally use the Able Trend software , however this is not necessary regarding the knowledge and virtual experience one can gain from this book , I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the financial markets .

什么样的决定使你创建了AbleTrend?

自AbleTrend理念诞生后, 我着手建立了一个科学方程并形成一套指标。基于这些努力的结果, 市场走势和主要的支撑位以及阻力位如今都能轻易地被我们在纸上或在电脑屏幕上绘制出来, 并且能适用于任何市场和任何时间间隔内的图表。

让我们谈谈创建一个交易系统，一名交易商要经历哪些步骤?
一名交易商应当遵循三个主要的步骤。第一步是选用一个必须遵循自然规律的根本而通用的交易原则，例如在跟踪趋势和反跟踪趋势的方法之间,我会选择使用跟踪趋势的方法。因为这样我就不需要找出峰顶和峰谷，虽然我也认同要找出峰顶和峰谷是不可能的。

在横向市场中,交易商能做短线交易吗?
可以，但是我还是不建议抓峰顶和峰谷。我看的是一系列的趋势，并且把他们的标志为趋势1、趋势2，趋势3等等。我喜欢在趋势2的止损位看价格是否适合交易。如果价格没有穿透止损位，那么这是一个回调，这就意味着我们可以抓住这个机会。所以，如果一个趋势已经开始，价格拉近我设置的止损位，我就可以考虑建仓，因为我很快就会知道自己是对还是错。

第二步是什么?
第二步是基于这样一种理念:“少意味着多。” 信息不一定是越多越好，你应该专注于两个关键信息——市场的方向和主要的支撑位、阻力位。
如果要想知道市场趋势是上升还是下降，主要的支撑位和阻力位在哪里。我们只需要专注于这两个部分,尽量得到正确的数据即可。

第三步是什么?
第三步是建立回测和前瞻性测试，以及用模拟交易模块来测试该理念。一般来说,开发一个交易系统时，只有20%的工作是开发交易系统本身，包括开发公式、设计指标等等。反而80%的工作是要验证交易系统，证明它提供的信号最终能导致交易决策赢利。运用历史数据的回溯测试和前瞻性测试都是验证交易系统过程的一部分。把它想成跟激光制导导弹一样，其中的检测、校准、全球定位系统与激光制导系统本身具有相同的重要性。

为什么回溯测试很重要?
人们在交易中，最好的方法就是使用经过验证的策略。
回溯测试是验证信号算法的第一个并且是最简单的方法。如果你没有通过回测确认，你怎能相信任何你正在使用的着色棒或灯或指标呢? 如果你盲目的跟随未经证实的讯号，你就好比在盲人摸象，代价会是很大。所以你必须确保正在使用的任何交易软件都有提供回测功能。在投入你的血汗钱之前，你可以提前验证该软件信号和策略的精准程度。

前瞻性测试和模拟测试重要性在哪里?
回溯测试包括观察历史数据和分析业绩表现两部分。
前瞻性测试其实应该叫“历史前瞻性测试”。它意味的并不是从现在开始测试。假设我们正处于六年前，现在是2009年, 那么回到我们刚开始设置程序参数的时候，也就是2003年。所以我们是在2004年测试系统,看它的效果如何。
我们在2004年年底再一次运行程序, 修改参数, 然后在2005年再测试它,看它的效果如何，我们就是通过这种方式来进行前瞻性测试。这样做的优势在于确保它能给出更可靠的结果。

什么是模拟交易?
当你在模拟交易时——就是说你不用冒任何资本的风险而进行交易——你会根据图表上的买入或卖出信号来买卖。这个程序将记录你所有的交易。你把程序时间设置好, 假定设到一年前, 然后用这一年的数据进行检验。这是一个用来测试你的系统是否能给您理想结果的重要方式。

当你测试和分析一个交易系统时,你会考虑到什么样的变量?
如果是新客户，我们建议您在模拟交易时不要改变交易系统里任何的参数设置。如果你更改了变量，整个程序都会改变，而你却不知道它是否能达成你想要的结果。所以当你在模拟交易时, 要保持参数不变。让程序设置到一年前让它运行, 这样你就可以看清楚该程序是怎样工作的。虽然，你可能会看到有一半的交易是赢利的而另一半是损失的，但是只要你每一笔的损失很少,而盈利却比较丰厚，这样就是一个有价值的交易过程。你每个月可能会有四到五个好的交易机会。这就是跟踪趋势的工作。

曲线拟合有什么缺点吗?
曲线拟合可以测试出该模型对历史数据是非常有效的。但对未来数据完全无效。由于我们的交易依据的是当前和未来的市场数据,在大多数情况下,曲线拟合对未来的市场无效。你使用的输入参数越多,曲线拟合的效果是会越好。但也由于你使用的参数太多,对未来市场的拟合就会变得越困难。这就是为什么我们在使用AbleTrend时只允许两个输入参数做变量。交易系统的关键是找出基本的市场行为规律,而不是拟合过去特定的历史数据。
如果一个交易系统是专为某一特定的市场某一特定的时间间隔设计的,程序员可以拟合历史数据，得出一个不切实际的过度优化的程序。所以我们提醒投资者要当心这些只为特定市场、特定时间间隔而设计的程序——例如,专为2分钟迷你标普指数设计的程序。

为什么要当心这些特定的程式呢?
因为这些程序很有可能是在曲线拟合历史数据。
